Midsummer ships another three DUO machines to its Italian factory

[Stockholm, Sweden, and Puglia, Italy, February 10, 2022.] Swedish solar energy leader Midsummer ships three of its DUO machines for the production of thin film solar cells from Järfälla in Sweden to its Italian factory in Bari. Midsummer Italia will soon have five production machines in place out of a total of 12, which qualifies for a first grant payment of an approx. SEK 80 million from the Italian investment authority Invitalia.

Midsummer has previously delivered two DUO machines to its subsidiary Midsummer Italia in Bari. The current shipments are three additional 5 MW DUO machines for the production of thin film solar cells. The machines are manufactured in Järfälla, Sweden. Two machines were shipped two days ago and the third machine is shipped today.

The start of solar cell production in Italy is expected to take place later this year, even before all planned 12 machines are installed. At full operation, the factory can produce 50 MW of solar cells per year, making it the largest of its kind in Europe.

Midsummer's thin film solar cells are light, flexible and with an ultra-low climate footprint. Swedish and international industry players have shown a very large interest in buying the company's future production and letters of intent for more than 700 MW of solar cells have already been signed, mainly from the factory in Sweden that Midsummer hopes to start building shortly. Midsummer Italia has already signed agreements for a third of the Italian factory's maximum production capacity with three national players in construction and roofing.

According to the final contractual terms of Midsummer's agreement with Italy's state investment authority Invitalia, Midsummer will receive direct support of approximately EUR 22 million (SEK 240 million) in the form of grants to commence production.

Invitalia is a state institution for investment and economic development, owned by the Italian Ministry of Finance. Invitalia strives to increase Italy's economic growth and focuses on strategic sectors for development and employment. Renewable energy has been identified as an important sector.
