[Stockholm, Sweden, March 1, 2022] As part of a development project to power commercial vehicles with solar energy, Swedish sustaintech leader Midsummer has delivered more than 15 kWp of specially designed solar modules to be mounted on a Scania hybrid truck trailer in the coming weeks.
The objective of the project, partially financed by Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova, is to make land transport more sustainable by using the electricity that the solar panels generate to power the truck. The energy produced by the Midsummer modules will potentially reduce the fuel consumption of a truck trailer by 5-10 percent every year in Sweden (and up to 20 percent in sunnier regions).
“The shipment of the modules is a great milestone in this tremendously interesting and promising project to make commercial vehicles sustainable,” said Midsummer’s CEO Sven Lindström. “With electricity from solar panels the range of a hybrid truck can be extended which will ultimately both save fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The potential to supply commercial fleets around the world with solar panels is enormous.”
“It is also a testament to Midsummer’s technological leadership in thin film solar cells. We have other groundbreaking projects involving floating offshore solar energy rafts and solar panels for spacecraft, in addition to our best-selling state of the art solar roofs.”
